I just had my yearly mammogram, and I got a good report. My report did mention that I have dense breast tissue, which can cover up potential problems, but in any case, I don’t have to repeat the mammogram for another year. Yahoo!
It’s important to get in the habit of doing breast self-exams. It can take awhile to get the hang of it, but with continual practice you’ll be able to detect a lump or any breast changes.
Some women are afraid to do a breast self-exam, because it might be bad news. Thankfully, statistics show that most breast changes and lumps are not cancerous. If there is cancer present, it’s better to detect it in the early stages, so treatment is more effective.
Call your doctor if you find a lump or thickening, if the nipple turns in or has a bloody discharge, or the breast is red, swollen, and warm to the touch.
Here are three helpful guidelines to perform a breast self-exam:
Choose the Same Day
The best time to do a breast self-exam is three to five days after your period starts. This is the best time because your breasts are not as tender and lumpy. Stick to the same day each month if you have a normal menstrual cycle.
Women in menopause are also encouraged to do a monthly breast self-exam, so choose the same day each month. This is important because you may have hormone fluctuations, and keeping the same schedule helps you determine if a change is normal or something that a doctor needs to check out.
Perform Exam in the Shower
It can be easier to detect changes in breast tissue when the skin is wet and slippery, so get your hands lathered up with soap. Place your right hand behind your head, and with the three middle fingers of the left hand, use circular motions to examine the entire right breast.
Do the same for the left breast, and check for lumps or thickenings. Don’t forget to check breast tissue under your arms.
Try a Different Position
Lying down on a couch or bed lets you get familiar with how your breasts feel in a different position. You want the breast tissue to be evenly distributed on your chest, so place a towel or pillow under your right shoulder. Follow the same steps that you did with the shower exam.
Of course, doing a breast-self exam is not at the top of the list for fun activities, but it only takes a few minutes and if it improves your health you will be glad that you did.
