This is not really a subject to bring up at your next cocktail party, but as you age you may notice that you are passing more gas. Sometimes it is voluntary but at other times flatulence seems to pass on its own, and if you are in a public place it can be quite embarrassing.
You may experience abdominal symptoms such as cramping, shooting pains, belching or burping. Here is an interesting tidbit: the average healthy person passes gas around 13 to 21 times a day.
If you notice that you’ve lost weight without dieting, have diarrhea, abdominal pain or loss of appetite, your excess flatulence may be caused by something more serious, so consult your doctor as soon as possible.
The good news is that flatulence is more often caused by less serious and more easily treated factors. Some of the following conditions could be responsible for excess gas:
Dairy Products with Lactose
Lactose intolerance is a common problem that may be easily remedied. If you are drinking milk, try substituting lactose-free milk, soy milk, almond milk, or rice milk.
If you are still craving dairy products, eating yogurt may cause less discomfort. There are also Lactaid tablets that may improve your digestion after having your favorite dairy foods.
Fruits contain high amounts of fructose include apples, cherries, mangoes, watermelon and pears. You can still eat other fruits in moderate amounts and well-spaced throughout the day.
One thing that really sucks about getting older is you usually need to take more prescription medications.
Commonly prescribed medications include antibiotics, some narcotic pain relievers, and blood pressure medications.
Read the package insert to see if your medications list flatulence as a side effect, and if so, ask your doctor if you can switch to another medication.
I know from personal experience that it can cost an arm and a leg to pay for dental treatment, but if your dentures don’t fit well you can have difficulty chewing and swallowing food and may accidentally swallow air, which is then released as gas.
Excessive gas is just one more problem you have to deal with so try these tips, and experiment with different foods to see how they affect your digestion. The best thing is that you are doing some healthy things for your body.
