It’s no secret that people today are living longer, and they’re enjoying their golden years because they are practicing good health habits.
I have always been active and I am still exercising for 45 minutes every day and there are times I forget that I am 65 and should be taking it easy.
Here are five ways to feel younger:
Getting Out of Your Comfort Zone
Try something that you’ve been hesitant about doing and take action. It might be giving a speech, asking a mentor for help, or throwing caution to the wind and paragliding or trying the zipline.
My contribution to the idea of getting out of my comfort zone was riding a camel at the county fair. My mother and husband were with me and I decided to act like a big shot and show them how brave I was.
There was only one problem and that is that I was terrified inside and that feeling really intensified when they brought the camel over and I saw how big he was. I wished I could have gotten my leg twisted in back of me so I could kick my butt for being so stupid.
Oh well, two nice ladies helped me get in the saddle and we were off. Thankfully the camel was a slow walker and I regained my confidence as we circled around the venue twice. Believe it or not, I actually wished I could have ridden a little longer especially since I paid ten dollars.
You feel younger and happier when you help someone. There are so many ways that people need help. I worked in convalescent homes when I was younger and some of the residents never had anyone come to visit, and I could always brighten their day by just listening and letting them talk.
Pick an organization that you are passionate about and volunteer your time.
Taking Care of Yourself
Ladies, let’s face it, we are often so busy taking care of everyone else that our own needs get pushed to the back burner. Of course, if you have children you want to make sure they are taken care of and given every opportunity to excel in things they are interested in.
Now that your kids are grown, it’s time for you to find the things that bring you joy. You can volunteer at your favorite charity, get a pet, or hire a housekeeper to keep things neat so you are free to indulge in “me” time.
Eat pizza for breakfast, wear skinny jeans and t-shirts every day, or take a class at your local college.
Playing Like a Kid
Indulge the inner kid in you by playing on the swings at the park, blowing bubbles outside, or crafting a masterpiece out of a paint-by-numbers kit. Did you like to color when you were kid? Grab some crayons, and a pretty picture and put your special touches on it.
Learning Something New
Kacy had the right idea about learning something new.
“I feel my youngest when I do things that challenge my body and my mind. As an adult, I take classes in photography and American Sign Language, two of my passions in life.
I also recently got a group of women to go trapeze flying. We definitely aren’t fearless kids anymore and it was harder and scarier than we all anticipated, but we all did it, giggling and cheering each other all the way! It was an amazing experience.” —Kacy Moller, 43, Salt Lake City, UT.
