I am a big fan of Mexican food. One of our local restaurants has the best appetizer sampler. This thing is huge and includes quesadillas, fried jalapeno poppers, nachos, and deep fried flautas. I can feel my waistband tightening just talking about this yummy dish.
Now that I am a senior citizen with a sensitive stomach, I am trying to still celebrate my love of Mexican food but in a healthier way. Mexican food gets a bad rap because a lot of their dishes are made with or topped with sour cream, but there are many healthy options to choose from.
Here are five healthy ways to enjoy Mexican food:
Pair Guacamole with Vegetables
When you order guacamole, you usually get a basket of chips for dipping. Wow, that is so tasty! But walking on the healthy side, order some cut-up vegetables for dipping. You get the flavor of the guacamole with the nutrition of the vegetables.
Use portion control with the guacamole. It contains healthy fat but can pack a calorie wallop.
Order Grilled Fish Tacos
You may miss that deep-fried crunch, but grilled fish is better for you. To cut calories even further order a soft taco shell. If you order a corn tortilla shell, it is usually fried.
Order a side of black beans or salad and you have a tasty meal that you can feel good about.
Switch up Burritos
A lot of burritos are loaded with beef and cheese and boy are they delicious. For a healthier spin, switch to a bean filling. You’ll save even more calories if you order them with corn tortillas instead of flour.
Replace Side Dishes with a Salad
Most Mexican restaurants have salad fixings. Replace rice or beans with a salad. Use salsa instead of salad dressing and you’ll have a tasty low-calorie side.
Indulge in Fajitas
Fajitas are one of those dishes that can be made to order. There is usually some kind of meat and vegetables, rice, beans, cheese, and sour cream. A tortilla warmer can hold six to eight taco shells. Just grab a tortilla, fill it up, and enjoy.
If you are on a low-carb diet or just watching your calories, don’t use the tortillas. There are enough tasty fillings that you might not even miss them. Order chicken instead of steak.
Replace sour cream with a slice of avocado.
Eating healthier can be an adjustment, and you may be in a bad mood the first time that you order the healthier version of Mexican food. Stick with it and you may even lose a few pounds.
