I don’t like housecleaning and will do just about anything to get out of it. One of my favorite ways is to hire a housekeeper. It’s a win-win situation. The housekeeper needs a job and I need a clean house. Of course, some of these people will charge so much that they put you in the poorhouse.
Unfortunately, I have a champagne appetite on a beer salary, so I need to shoulder most of the cleaning load by myself. Spring cleaning is very popular, and involves a deep cleaning of the house and getting things organized and put in their appropriate places.
Just thinking about that makes me uneasy, and I would probably need a hunk of chocolate to devour while I’m forming my game plan. You don’t have to do it all in one day and there are some surprising benefits to spring cleaning.
Get Rid of Clutter
Things have a way of accumulating and there are also things that have sentimental value that are hard to part with. Make a pile for things you will keep and things that can be donated and help someone else. A 2010 study conducted at the University of California, Los Angeles found that when your house is clean, you’re in a better mood, and it reduces your risk of depression.
Improve Organizational Skills
Once you get everything clean and organized again, you know where things go and you won’t be tempted to let excessive things accumulate. You don’t have to wait until you have a pile to go through, and can sort as you need to.
This is probably the best part of spring cleaning. You’re dragging stuff out of dressers and closets, sweeping, dusting, and mopping floors. If you’re carrying things up and down the stairs, you’re giving your legs a good workout. After all that, you can skip your gym workout and beach on the couch.
Instead of fussing and moaning because you would rather be doing something else, recruit your roommate or friends to come and help. Play your favorite music and dance around the house as you clean. If you really want to dial up the fun factor, use a broom as a microphone and pretend you are singing karaoke.
This was not an easy task but you stuck with it and now you have a clean house to show for it. Do something you enjoy or buy yourself a treat. Order pizza for dinner so you don’t have to cook. Go on a day trip to some place you enjoy and meet some new people. It doesn’t have to be spring, to start doing a spring cleaning, and you’ll enjoy a clean fresh-smelling house. There is no time like the present to get started.
