When you’re in an anxious state, even little things cause you to worry, and in this state of mind, you can’t be as effective at your job, or in carrying out your other daily activities.
Here are five tips to avoid worry and reclaim your life:
Make a To-Do List
For example, you may be worried about having breakfast on the table at a certain time, being late for work, or not having time to pack a nutritious lunch for the kids.
This is where a to-do list comes in handy. As each item is finished, check it off. Do as much preparation as you can the night before.
Make up hot cereal for breakfast and pack lunches. Set the alarm and don’t hit the snooze button when it goes off. Get everyone up a little earlier, so that everyone can get out the door on time.
Double check your list to make sure you have everything you need.
Set Aside Time to Worry
Sometimes you just have to let the “worry” flow. Set aside some time each day for each situation that causes you to worry and just worry as much as you want to for that period of time.
Imagine the worst thing that could possibly happen. For example, you accidentally wear a different shoe on each foot when you go to work. The whole office laughs and points at you, and when you go to the cafeteria there are more snickers from the crowd.
You may find yourself laughing out loud at how ridiculous that sounds, and it gives you a break from worrying.
Keep a Journal
Writing worries down allows all the tension to drain out of your body, and when you’re well-rested you don’t worry as much. Take it a step further and as you write down what you are worried about, think of a solution to solve the problem. You may even think of more than one solution, so write down everything for future reference.
Improve Your Diet
I don’t know how many times I have heard people tell me that they don’t have the time or money to eat healthier. This is an excuse to keep eating unhealthy foods such as Pop-Tarts™ or fast food.
Think about how much you pay in the store for fruit. Bananas are less than a dollar a pound, and are a good source of potassium. You know the old saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Apples are tasty and are a good source of fiber.
Buy inexpensive cuts of meet such as skirt steak, beef shank, or pork sirloin chops instead of filet mignon, pork rib chops, or short ribs. Invest in a good cookbook and try out some new recipes. When you’re eating right, you feel healthier, and there doesn’t seem to be as much to worry about.
Accept That Life is Never Perfect
No one on this earth is truly worry free. This is an unrealistic expectation that can ultimately cause more worry when you start to worry about worrying.
Try to differentiate between the worrying that most people experience and the unnatural worrying that leads to anxiety. After all, you wouldn’t be a parent if you didn’t feel worried about your child’s first date or when they take the car for the first time.
Live your life fully and do something you enjoy every day. Solve problems that have a solution, and try not to worry about things that you can’t control.
